Are Canadians the new slave owners...05 Wheelers Corner 11th Feb 2020

Canadian Government appears to treat its Indigenous peoples like most Americans treated their slaves!

Question:

Is Canada now moving down the dictatorship path as is the United States?

I know that the US government for the most part ignores its Indigenous people...
but I thought Canada was different.

I thought they had developed a more caring society that tried at least to treat all peoples as human being...but alas it would seem that I was mistaken.

In Northern British Columbia, the federal and provincial governments -- bolstered by armed tactical forces from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) -- are forcing the Coastal GasLink (CGL) pipeline through unceded Wet'suwet'en Territory. In contravention of Canada’s and BC’s obligations under the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), this decision was made without the consent of the hereditary chiefs, the widely-acknowledged leaders of the Wet'suwet'en people.

Since 2010, the land and water defenders on Wet’suwet’en territory have mounted a campaign to assert their title to the land and prevent the construction of the Coastal GasLink Pipeline. The construction of the CGL pipeline violates Wet’suwet’en sovereignty and undermines Canada’s ability to meet its climate targets.

Whenever Canada has a chance to depart from its brutal colonial past with First Nations, it automatically lapses into bad habits.

On Thursday, the RCMP and the Canadian state came to a moral crossroads on a snowy country road and looked briefly down a pathway to reconciliation. Then it said, “Fuck it.”
A highly militarized police presence once again used force against Wet’suwet’en protestors blocking the construction of a $6.6-billion methane pipeline needed to feed a grossly uneconomic $40-billion liquefied natural gas project.
In recent weeks, the situation has reached an inflection point. In a ruling that handwaved away prior rulings on Indigenous rights and title (see the Supreme Court of Canada’s ruling Delgamuukw v the Queen, 1997) and contravened Canada’s obligations under UNDRIP, the BC Supreme Court rubber-stamped an injunction in favor of CGL, saying that construction of the pipeline must go ahead. The RCMP have moved into position and after last minute talks "broke down," began violently raiding Wet'suwet'en territory. Thus far, six land defenders have been arrested by militarized police using automatic weapons, night vision, and dogs. Media have been continuously barred from filming the arrests and RCMP officers.

It's a story as old as Canada. As you read this, the latest bloody chapter is being written.

Indigenous leaders and youth have sent out a call to all across the world to show solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en as they assert their right to self-determination in their homeland. Extinction Rebellion Canada is calling upon its sister chapters across the world to call attention to and mobilise over the coming week in support of the front-line defenders resisting ongoing colonial violence and the acceleration of the climate and ecological emergencies.

PS It should be noted that the risks these defenders of the earth face are orders of magnitude more dangerous than what many XR rebels throughout the west experience

SHORT FORM
In Northern British Columbia, the federal and provincial governments -- bolstered by armed tactical forces from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) -- are forcing the Coastal GasLink (CGL) pipeline through unceded Wet'suwet'en Territory, this decision was made without the consent of the hereditary chiefs, the widely-acknowledged leaders of the Wet'suwet'en people. To build the pipeline, the RCMP have begun violently raiding Wet’suwet’en territory. More than 10 land defenders have been arrested and all have been terrorised by a para-military police force. Media has been banned from filming these actions.

Canadian Indigenous leaders and youth have sent out a call to all across the world to show solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en as they assert their right to self-determination in their homeland. Extinction Rebellion Canada is calling upon its sister chapters across the world to mount demonstrations (for example, at Canadian embassies and consulates) and, over the coming week, mobilise in support of the front-line defenders resisting ongoing colonial violence and the acceleration of the climate and ecological emergencies.

I've long believed that the oppression of the native peoples of "Great" Britain - the Scots, Irish and Welsh - constituted a downtrodden opportunism of the English. Of course, many such actions are veiled by the involvement of traitorous natives, as had been seen in the in the earlier involvement of English involvement with the oppressive Romans. One can only hope there will now be enough humane support from people around the world to support the native people of Canada in overcoming today's blatant oppression!
