Oh to be young again and bias free...good friends forever.
 1. Why were they hiding? Why did they hide their identity?

Waitangi Day has come and gone and I never saw one Hobson’s Pledge fan present at all the local events I attended.

Maybe they were there but were hiding, the local leader of Hobson’s Pledge in the city Donald Esslemont if he was present kept his face well hidden.

Before the term Hobson’s Pledge was created some 50 years after the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, the term ‘Hobson’s choice’ was used to describe the treaty options. Now-days of course it has as a different meaning for real modern New Zealanders:

The phrase is said to have originated with Thomas Hobson (1544–1631), a livery stable owner in Cambridge, England, who offered customers the choice of either taking the horse in his stall nearest to the door or taking none at all.

Modern use
The term "Hobson's choice" is often used to mean an illusion of choice, but it is not a choice between two equivalent options, which is a Morton's fork, nor is it a choice between two undesirable options, which is a dilemma. Hobson's choice is one between something or nothing.

John Stuart Mill, in his book Considerations on Representative Government, refers to Hobson's choice:
When the individuals composing the majority would no longer be reduced to Hobson's choice, of either voting for the person brought forward by their local leaders, or not voting at all.[9]

In another of his books, The Subjection of Women, Mill discusses marriage:
Those who attempt to force women into marriage by closing all other doors against them lay themselves open to a similar retort. If they mean what they say, their opinion must evidently be that men do not render the married condition so desirable to women, as to induce them to accept it for its own recommendations.

It is not a sign of one's thinking the boon one offers very attractive, when one allows only Hobson's choice, 'that or none'.... And if men are determined that the law of marriage shall be a law of despotism, they are quite right in point of mere policy, in leaving to women only Hobson's choice. But, in that case, all that has been done in the modern world to relax the chain on the minds of women, has been a mistake. They should have never been allowed to receive a literary education.[10]

A Hobson's choice is different from:
·        Dilemma: a choice between two or more options, none of which is attractive.
·        False dilemma: only two choices are considered, when in fact there are others.
·        Catch-22: a logical paradox arising from a situation in which an individual needs something that can only be acquired by not being in that very situation.
·        Morton's fork, and a double bind: choices yield equivalent, and often undesirable, results.
·        Blackmail and extortion: the choice between paying money (or some non-monetary good or deed) or risk suffering an unpleasant action.

The term ‘Hobson’s Choice’ is used to explain the offer made to Maori in 1840 to accept the terms laid down by Hobson…The only meaningful version of the treaty [the one signed by the massive bulk of Maori leaders was the Maori Version…the only problem was that New Zealand’s settler and crown leadership never had any intention of treating Maori and non-voting settlers as equals.

Esslemont and Brash stated in their latest half page ad in the local paper ‘that a Maori Ward would affect the voting process…that is simply a lie! In no way will it change in any respect your voting rights or process or who you opt to vote for…
PS:
Hobson’s Pledge fan Bob Jones resigns from National Business Review:
Yet another rich grumpy old white male Bob Jones.

UPDATE: Bob Jones has quit the NBR due to the NBR pulling his obscenely racist column from their online site. The Daily Blog has asked if Bob Jones will be joining Cameron Slater on Whaleoil. The Daily Blog has had no response from his office.

2.  Let’s take a quick look at which Councillors support Maori Wards. In the picture below you notice that one Cr is marked with
a question mark, she is Gabrielle Bundy-Cooke. Well she informed her fellow Cr’s that she strongly supports Maori Wards…so that lifts the total Cr's to eleven who are at this point supporting Maori Wards when you add the Mayor that equals 12 out of sixteen possible votes… Of course, us who watch Cr’s behaviour had strong doubts about one in particular Cr, Cr, Lew Findlay he has become well known for his fence sitting and back peddling.

The question mark becomes a tick..
Over the years he seems to go missing when the votes are close, he accidentally departs the chamber before key deciding votes. And this year he did it again after stating clearly on the night…”That he had thought long and hard about the issue he had reached the view that now was the time to move forward and support the Maori ward option… but oh dear me just a short while later he back peddled flat out and got his name in the paper saying that he now opposed the massive council opting for a Maori ward…poor Lew…so sad…

Regarding the other Cr’s, let hope that the wisdom and courage of those who after serious consideration have opted for the Maori Ward choice remain strong and don’t give into the self-preservation pressures of the Lew Findlay style character.

Let’s all have faith in the democratic processes that exist…we voted for our Cr’s to listen and to decide. Do we call for a poll to question a rates rise? No because the law doesn’t allow us to do that. Yet when they decide by an overwhelming majority to have Maori wards, the law allows for 5% of the rate payers to force the council to fork out one hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars of your hard earned money.

Look at the huge amounts of money that Hobson’s Pledge has been poured into paying for the half page ads in our local paper, and ask yourself ‘Why are they doing this? And they even had the audacity to suggest that Maori Wards will cost more…that ladies and gentlemen is simply bull-shit of the highest order. Ask yourself why a bunch of wealthy outsiders are funding this anti-democratic behaviour?

I can only hope that Cr’s Brent Barrett, Susan Baty, Rachel Bowen, Gabrielle Bundy-Cooke, Vaughan Dennison, Jim Jefferies, Lorna Johnson, Duncan McCann, Aleisha Rutherford and Tangi Utikere and the Mayor Grant Smith if required, will after the 21st hit the road running as they campaign for a yes vote for Maori.

It would be really great if this campaign wasn’t needed, not only would it save us, the rate payers, a heap of cash it would prove that the majority have grown up and no longer live in the long tarnished past that fed the flame of hate known as racism and fear of what was once unknown…

Those Councillor's named above have taken a huge step forward in seeking to join those other local government bodies around the country that have Maori wards and have had for many years…

So let our region [Palmerston North and Manawatu] become a hot bed of democracy in action, a table at which we can all sit and dine in honour and safety as we manage our local and community affairs.

Where we can share: the wonderful aromas of new experiences rather than the digestion of stale out-dated crumbs from histories long consumed bigotry. Let us partake in a feast of collectiveness and let us fully introduce this practice to rest of our nation and then the world.

All of this can be achieved if we change our dining habits and share the hopes and aspirations of those Councillors who seek a better future through cooperation rather than fear.

  1. A message from Mike and Carol Dee, two people brave enough to sign their name. Unlike the supporters of Hobson’s Pledge who hide behind anonymous texts etc.

Open letter- to whom it may concern:
[We don’t know who you are, as the enclosed form was sent anonymously]

We are happy to accept the decision by elected Councillors to create a Maori Ward. Our Councillors were elected to make important decisions on the community’s behalf. This proposed poll seeks to undermine that democratic process.

“….because politicians are elected to lead, not follow.”
Attributed to UK PM Harold Wilson when asked why his government had abolished capital punishment against a polled majority wanting to retain it.

Democracy is not just rule by the will of the majority. It is also concerned with protecting the rights of minorities – against the will of the majority, if necessary.

New Zealand women, living in a parliamentary democracy, gained the vote in 1893. Swiss women, living in a system of rule by referendum, had to wait until 1972.

So much for rule by referendum

Yours faithfully
 Mike & Carol Dee

Another message I received said the following:
 Hi Peter
Don Esslemont went into the Plaza after the main event in the Square at about 1.30pm seeking signatures for his petition. When I saw him approaching other diners; I challenged him about lack of authority to do so, his response was "It's a public place". I phoned the Plaza management today who confirmed it is not a public place and they do not permit polling, petitions etc. They said they would remind all their retail outlets and look out for Hobson's Pledge supporters. Email ends.

It would appear that both Don’s failed to follow the rules…is this a sign of their general intelligence? Remember these are the elderly old white males who preach ‘One law for all, but it would seem not for them.

How to take back your signature:

Now if you feel that you signed the Don Brash / Don Esslemont petition without being correctly informed, or you were fooled into signing, as may well be the case for some elderly folk…you can send a message to the City Council or the District council and have your name withdrawn…it is believed that over a dozen people have taken this course of action thus far.

Strange as it might sound but the Klu-Klux-Klan lynch mobs who mass murdered hundreds if not thousands of Blacks, covered their faces to avoid being recognised, yet even today we have frightened people who lack the fortitude, to tell the truth as they seek signatures. If you are approached to sign their racist poll, I ask you to be polite…while you consider telling him or her to bugger off,
2. This from the Daily bog site:

“I want to target one particular scum bag, National Party wonder boy – Chris Bishop. Listening to your bullshit excuse as to why you wouldn’t vote because it didn’t have ‘enough regulation’ was sophistry of the highest order.
Aren’t you a former tobacco lobbyist you filthy clown? Didn’t you peddle a product a thousand times more lethal than the one you just voted against?
Fuck you, you lying hypocritical maggot.
This is the National Party, the party of liberty and personal choice – what a load of corrupt sleaze bags with the ethics of vultures on meth.

Everywhere in the world where meaningful cannabis reform has occurred, it has done so because people put it to a referendum beyond the cowardice of politicians.
We will fight to get that referendum up in time for the 2020 election and on that day when we win, we will ram its results so far down the throat of these arseholes they gag themselves another set of lungs.
Respects to Chloe and the Greens for championing this and for running with it, their courage is to be saluted.
To the binding referendum Brothers& Sisters where these spineless politicians can’t stop us! Helen Kelly would be ashamed of the entire Parliament today.

PS.
I slipped this next item in because it is a hot weather subject, Larry Haist sent it to me and its well worth a look:

Cheers and have a good week...

1. Don Brash carried out a flying visit the Palmerston North and Fielding on Wednesday spending Hobson’s Pledges cash via a half page ad in the Manawatu Standard…that’s a few thousand bucks folks…in an effort to boost his disciple Don Esslemont in his strange desire to oppose a Maori Ward for Palmerston North.
Well in an effort to present an unbiased view I’m simply going to inform you of what the Manawatu Standard wrote. Part A was written by Richard Mays:
Donald [Brash] number 1

“Don Brash, controversial spokesman for lobby group Hobson's Pledge, is to visit Manawatū on Wednesday to rally support for petitions that seek to overturn local council decisions on Māori wards.
Both the Palmerston North City Council and Manawatū District Council voted last year in favour of Māori wards.
Hobson's Pledge is a lobby group dedicated to removing what it sees as legislative favoritism for Māori.
Unattributed pamphlets inviting Manawatū District and city residents to sign a petition demanding a binding poll on Māori wards had been circulated to voters through letterboxes and rural mail boxes.

Brash said Hobson's Pledge was financing the petition.
"A number of locals are unhappy about what has happened and we are keen to support them call for a poll on the issue," he said.
In Palmerston North, the council voted in favour of a Māori ward, even though two thirds of the submissions were against it.
In Fielding, consultation on establishing a ward took place between the council and local marae, six of them voting in favour, four against and two abstaining. In November, six councillors voted for wards, with four against.

Brash said he would be spending the morning in Feilding and the afternoon in Palmerston North. It was up to local petition organizers, Manawatū District Councillor Andrew Quarrie, who voted against the ward proposal, and Don Esslemont, in Palmerston North, how they made use of him.

However, the yellow petitions pamphlets, separately worded for both local authority regions, didn't carry any acknowledgement of Hobson's Pledge.
"I don't know why [the petitions] don't refer to us. We weren't trying to hide the fact that we were funding it," Brash said.
"We didn't want the issue clouded by someone from outside. It has got to be something local ratepayers express their views on."
When asked why the local petitions were not attributed to Hobson's Pledge, Esslemont said "it never crossed my mind".
"We never asked [ourselves] the question whether we should put anything on it."
Donald number 2 [Esslemont]

As well as the anonymity, there was some confusion about the delivery of the petition pamphlets. Some city suburbs missed out, while some Fielding residents reported that Palmerston North pamphlets ended up in their letterboxes.
Esslemont said he had only been made aware of the problem on Thursday and was talking about it with the distributors.

Next Wednesday, he said Brash would spend time around Fielding's Manchester Square and Palmerston North's The Square, talking with people about signing the poll petitions, which have to be submitted before February 21. A poll required the signatures of 2727 registered city electors and 1004 registered district council voters.
If a poll on the issue was necessary in Palmerston North, it could cost between $100,000 and $125,000.
In the Manawatū District, council spokesman Paul Stein said the poll would cost between $80,000 and $100,000

Part B.
From: Jimmy Ellingham a Manawatū Standard news director.

Māori ward opponents 'didn't think' about telling us who they are

Don Brash isn't sure why Hobson's Pledge didn't put its name to pamphlets about its views on Māori wards.

OPINION: Everyone has the right to express their views.
It's one of the wonderful things about living in a democracy and means people can broadcast all sorts of opinions, no matter how stuffy.
So it was when a pamphlet headlined "We want a vote on Māori wards" turned up in Palmerston North and Manawatū letterboxes.

Such wards are proving a divisive issue in local-body politics and both the Palmerston North City and Manawatū District councils have voted in favour of their establishment.

Opposition has been loud and clear. Two-thirds of pubic submissions in the city were against the move,[ but only two turned up to speak to the issue] while the Manawatū council vote passed by six to four.[and the PNCC council voted 11 to 4 in support of Maori Wards]
According to the pamphlet, if 2727 people sign an online petition in Palmerston North, the council must hold a binding poll on the issue.
The pamphlet's authors were firm: "We believe that Māori wards are not necessary for council decisions... all of which are for the benefit of everyone, irrespective of ethnicity.

"The added cost of red tape of a Māori ward is the last thing ratepayers need."

Leaving aside the dubious claims that such a ward would come with extra costs, there was a surprising omission.

Nowhere on the pamphlet, not once, did the authors reveal themselves. Contact details merely point to a Fielding PO Box and anonymous email address.

It turns out lobby group Hobson's Pledge is behind them, but, like an anonymous online comment, it's difficult to give its opinions any weight if it's not upfront about them.

It's also tempting to conclude the group was too gutless to put its name to its views, especially given the, for some, toxic association with former National and ACT leader Don Brash, who late last year spoke out against Radio NZ announcers using Māori language on air.

Palmerston North petition organiser Don Esslemont said of leaving the Hobson's Pledge name off the pamphlet: "It never crossed my mind": Seriously? Did it not occur to Esslemont that we might want to know who is telling us to oppose Māori wards, so we can develop an informed view on what is said?

Brash, who the group is wheeling out in Manawatū this week, wasn't sure why the pamphlets didn't refer to Hobson's Pledge.

The war of the wards is a legitimate local-government issue, but in the battle of open debate, the most vocal forgot their basic introductions.

Jimmy Ellingham is a Manawatū Standard news director.

Bull-Shit Ad used by Hobson/s pledge caption
With all this press coverage as well a half page ad in the paper, you think that the supporters would pour out in their hundred, all those who opposed Maori Wards but failed to turn up to speak to their submission to the council, only two actually spoke against Maori Wards.

The Manawatu Standard was kind in its remarks on the massive turn out of anti-Maori Ward rate payers…there was around ten supporters and ten opposition members of the public who turned up to greet their great white leader Donald Brash ex-Nats leader and ex Act Party leader and co-leader of Hobson’s Pledge, a far North racist structure best known for its false advertising as demonstrated in this ad: Every last one of the happy youth live outside of New Zealand…not one belongs to Hobson’s Pledge…or even knows who Hobson was!

One last point: I received this information on Friday:
